Internships and Volunteer Opportunities

POSITION SUMMARY:

CSU Todos Santos welcomes applications for internship and volunteer positions. These positions provide an opportunity to engage in cultural and academic exchange between Mexican and U.S. students, as well as with local members and organizations from the Baja California Sur community.

Selected interns and volunteers may work as a member of the CSU Todos Santos team and will choose an area of interest and a specific project to pursue. Each project will support an outreach component of a CSU-related program, which may develop, expand, or continue existing or new projects.

The successful applicant will be an ambassador for diversity and cross-cultural dialogue; demonstrate an ability to work effectively within the cultural contexts of Baja California Sur Mexico and CSU; be able to contribute to a dynamic and welcoming learning environment; work both independently and in a team environment; possess excellent analytical, strategic-thinking, problem-solving, and organizational skills; exemplify excellent written and oral communication skills; and build strong and positive working relationships with everyone who comes to CSU Todos Santos.

TEAM STRUCTURE:

This position reports directly to the CSU Todos Santos Associate Director, or to a Program Coordinator.

POSITION ROLES AND FUNCTIONS:

Student engagement

  • Be available at during evenings and weekends, and other times as assigned
  • Maintain on-going interactions and conversations with students individually and as a community
  • Maintain a high profile on campus; be approachable and receptive
  • In collaboration with CSU Todos Santos team members, attend and/or facilitate select student welcome and orientation sessions as well as the check-in and out process for groups
  • Program evening activities for students on campus
  • Oversee and lead the organization and use of the common kitchen
  • Interns and volunteers may not provide transportation to students or participants, unless responding to a medical emergency

Community engagement

  • Propose, develop, and implement a special project that address the local community priorities
  • Create a welcoming atmosphere for CSU Todos Santos workshops and public lectures, including greeting participants, answering questions, and assisting with space/technology needs
  • Facilitate activities and implement strategies that connect students with each other and with Todos Santos community members

Staff functions

  • Attend training activities
  • Facilitate CSU Todos Santos open house tours
  • Assist with CSU and local programming logistics
  • Assist with CSU Todos Santos administrative duties
  • Assist with community tours and field site excursions as needed
  • Actively support other members of CSU Todos Santos; work collaboratively as a team
  • Excursions with staff outside of campus must be pre-approved by the CSU Todos Santos Associate Director, and must be directly relevant to program planning or implementation

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in written and spoken English and Spanish
  • Bachelor’s Degree or currently enrolled in a degree-granting program

PREFERENCE GIVEN TO APPLICANTS WITH THE FOLLOWING PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • International travel or study experience
  • Experience living and working in Latin America, particularly in Mexico
  • Availability for a full semester internship or volunteer position

BENEFITS AND COMPENSATION:

Benefits and compensation, if any, are determined on a case-by-case basis. CSU Todos Santos may provide lodging and some meals in addition to mentoring and support with project development. Potential financial support may be granted to current CSU students and applicants having the appropriate immigration or work status. Interns provide their own travel and other living expenses (airfare, transportation, personal items) and are required to show proof of international health insurance.

ABOUT CSU TODOS SANTOS:

The location for this position is in Todos Santos, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Todos Santos is located on the Baja peninsula, on the Pacific coast approximately an hour northwest of Cabo San Lucas and southwest of La Paz. CSU Todos Santos opened in October of 2015 as an extension of CSU’s land-grant mission of teaching, research, service and outreach for residents of Baja California Sur and CSU students and faculty.
